How to Copy a URL

Copy an article link in Chrome, Safari and Edge on any computer, phone or tablet, then paste it into Factful.

One minute, captions on screen, no sound needed. The same steps are written out below.

Which browsers this covers

This guide covers the three browsers that each have 5% or more of worldwide usage: Google Chrome, Safari and Microsoft Edge (StatCounter, September 2026). Firefox, Samsung Internet, Opera and other browsers work the same way: click or tap the address bar, then choose Copy.

Copy the whole link, from "https://" to the last character. A link you copy from the address bar or from a link menu is complete. A screenshot, the page title, or the site name alone is not.

Chrome on a computer (Windows, Mac, Chromebook)

  1. Click the address bar at the top of the window, or press Ctrl + L (Mac: ⌘ + L).
  2. The whole link highlights. If it does not, press Ctrl + A (Mac: ⌘ + A) to select all.
  3. Press Ctrl + C (Mac: ⌘ + C). You can also right-click the highlighted link and choose Copy.

Microsoft Edge on a computer (Windows, Mac)

  1. Click the address bar, or press Ctrl + L (Mac: ⌘ + L).
  2. The whole link highlights. If it does not, press Ctrl + A (Mac: ⌘ + A).
  3. Press Ctrl + C (Mac: ⌘ + C), or right-click the highlighted link and choose Copy.

Safari on a Mac

Safari shows only the site name until you click the address bar. That is normal: the full link is still there.

  1. Click the address bar, or press ⌘ + L. The full link appears and highlights.
  2. Press ⌘ + C. Safari copies the full address, not just the site name.
  3. Another way: click the Share button in the toolbar and choose Copy Link.

Safari on iPhone or iPad

  1. Tap the address bar. If the link is not highlighted, tap it once more.
  2. Tap Copy in the small menu that appears.
  3. Another way: tap the Share button and choose Copy.

Chrome or Edge on iPhone or iPad

These are separate apps from Safari, but copying works the same way.

  1. Tap the address bar.
  2. Tap the Copy link (or Copy) button next to the address, or tap the highlighted link and choose Copy.
  3. Another way: open the menu, choose Share, then Copy.

Chrome or Edge on Android

  1. Tap the address bar at the top.
  2. Tap the Copy icon at the right of the bar. If you do not see one, touch and hold the link, then tap Copy.
  3. Another way: open the menu (three dots), choose Share, then Copy link.

Copy a link from a message, email or social post

  1. On a phone or tablet, touch and hold the link. On a computer, right-click it.
  2. Choose Copy link, Copy Link or Copy link address, depending on your browser or app.
  3. Do not choose Open or Share if you want to paste the link into Factful.

Paste it into Factful

  1. Click the box on FactfulNews.com that says Paste a news article URL.
  2. Press Ctrl + V (Mac: ⌘ + V). On a phone or tablet, touch and hold the box, then tap Paste.
  3. Press Check. Factful reads the article and checks its claims against independent reporting.

If it still does not work

Make sure the link goes to one news article, not a home page, a search page, a video or a social profile. Links behind a paywall or sign-in may not be readable. If you think Factful is wrong, or you are stuck, use the contact page and include the link you tried.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy a URL?

Click or tap the address bar at the top of your browser so the full link highlights, then press Ctrl + C (Mac: ⌘ + C) or tap Copy. Paste it where you need it with Ctrl + V (Mac: ⌘ + V).

Why does Safari only show the site name?

Safari hides the rest of the address to keep the bar tidy. Click or tap the address bar and the full link appears. Copying from there copies the full link.

How do I copy a link on my phone?

Tap the address bar, then tap Copy (or the copy icon). To copy a link inside a message or an app, touch and hold the link and choose Copy link.

What if I copied the wrong thing?

Paste into the Factful box and look at it. A good link starts with https:// and ends with the article address. If it looks wrong, go back to the article and copy again.
